I’ve been really concerned lately about the quality of the recently published fiction works! Has anyone noticed lately that almost most of the newly produced books are not that great? I mean it’s either that or I’m becoming very picky!
I’m a big fan of the romance genre, and I especially enjoy it when it’s accompanied by another genre such as mystery or suspense. However, lately I feel that I’ve been just skimming through books… all of them sharing somewhat the same story, but different characters.
Are there no original plots anymore?
What happened to character depth?
Since when did cursing become a trait that gave a character depth and originality?
Since when did the number of sex scenes in a book determine how good it is?
What happened to characters with proper back stories?
What happened to delivering works that are memorable? unique?.. different? you know, a book that I wouldn’t forget about the next day?
I know I’m being negative, but when I pick up a book, I expect to be impressed… the writing style, the plot, the characters’ interaction and how the story builds up. I don’t see that in a lot of book nowadays and it’s just sad, because I end up rereading books, since well… I can’t find new ones!
I’m not saying all the newly published works are bad, but almost a lot of them are! I know that liking a book is matter of personal taste.. but I think we can all agree that there’s a difference between not liking a story, and the fact that a book is not really well-thought out! I can not like a book for it’s plot, but I can still acknowledge the fact that this specific author put a lot of effort into polishing and producing it.
Or again, it could just be me becoming very picky with my reads! Maybe I just need to switch to another genre for a while!
I’m gonna stop my ranting now, since I’m almost pretty sure that everyone else is posting about the beginning of a new year! I’m the only one nagging!
